The West is measured by vast distances - from high plains to granite mountain ranges to the dramatic Pacific. It's a series of landscapes of extreme contrasts. The Interstate highways are very predictable - the roads, exits, and interchange businesses have a sameness that makes most long drives intolerable. Driving old secondary two-lane routes, one passes through towns and rural countryside on what were once the main regional highways and main streets, where there are wonderful discoveries of culture, history, architecture, and real life that are missing from most of our twenty-first century journeys.
