Rural Oahu, circled by old Kamehameha Highway, has many small seaside villages and towns - each with a community store, generally operated for generations by the same family. Recently, many of these stores, often times the social and economic center of the community, have been replaced by new mainland-style Circle K or 7/11 stores and highway strip centers.
The unique character of historic rural Oahu is now becoming much like the rest of the USA - the same "chain" options for purchasing food, gas, and junk souvenirs are everywhere. These community stores that survive in rural Hawai'i need to be celebrated and preserved, as well as the wonderful "Island-style" individuality and regional culture they represent.
