Venice has always been one of my favorite cities to explore and discover something new (or old) around every corner. Even before my first trip there in 1996, I was fascinated by the history of a city (and nation) that reached the height of its glory as a republic in the 13th century. Constructing a city over open marshes and shallow water islands was an engineering feat of great accomplishment, and the fact that it has lasted for over seven centuries has kept me coming back.Of course, Venice is in danger of disappearing below the sea from the weight and age of its buildings as well as the overabundance of tourists, especially in the summer months. But it still remains as a center of art and beauty, and a wonderful city to get lost in, especially during the fall and winter months.
