One of the enduring images of the American rural landscape is the old barn adjacent to a farm family home, generally surrounded by fields far into the distance. The barn is a recurring symbol of small farming - a home for animals, a tool shed, a feed storage warehouse, and a garage for farm implements. American barns have a distinct regional character - from red or white eastern exposed plank or clapboard barns to western bow roof and log barns. Most existing American barns were constructed in the early and mid-twentieth century, although many New England and Northeastern barns date from the eighteenth century. |
